Venice Film Festival, which is set to run
from August 28 to September 2024

Promises to be a particularly exciting edition with a diverse lineup of films, star-studded premieres, and significant political and historical themes.
This year’s festival will showcase works from renowned directors like Pedro Almodóvar, whose English-language debut The Room Next Door is eagerly anticipated, and Angelina Jolie starring as opera legend Maria Callas in Maria.
Other notable films include Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which will open the festival, and Harmony Korine’s experimental Baby Invasion.
The festival will also address heavy historical and political topics. For example, Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5 revisits the 1972 Munich Olympics tragedy, while Andres Veiel’s documentary Riefenstahl explores the Nazi-era filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl’s controversial legacy. Additionally, Joe Wright’s series Son of the Century on Benito Mussolini’s rise is expected to stir conversations given its relevance to current political climates.
Venice 2024 will also bring a mix of steamy dramas, including Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman, which recalls the erotic thrillers of the 90s, and Drew Starkey’s role in Queer, based on a novel by William S. Burroughs.
The festival’s reputation as a launchpad for Oscar contenders continues, with many films like Maria and The Room Next Door expected to be strong contenders during awards season. With a red carpet packed with A-list celebrities, Venice is set to once again capture the attention of the global film community.
