A painterly journey through emotion and memory: the Napolitudine exhibition
From October 31 to December 2, 2025, in the evocative setting of the Antisala dei Baroni inside Naples’ Maschio Angioino, the public is invited to explore Napolitudine exhibition. Partenope’s Journey through the Painting of Luigi Gentile, curated by Maria Corbi. The exhibition is part of the Napoli 2500 celebrations and enjoys the patronage of the Campania Region, the Metropolitan City of Naples, the Municipality of Naples, and the Academy of Fine Arts.
Over 200 works to narrate Naples’ visual and emotional identity
The curatorial project is a retrospective that unfolds through more than 40 oil paintings, 150 pastels and 10 ceramics. Together, these works trace Luigi Gentile’s creative and emotional universe, offering a layered and poetic reading of Neapolitan identity.
“When I begin to paint, I’m seized by a physical urgency, which intensifies the moment the brush soaked in color touches the canvas […] I couldn’t think, I had to act, beyond thought”.

Partenope as a visual and emotional root
The title Napolitudine reveals the core of Gentile’s approach: Naples is not merely a geographic place, but a place of the soul – an inner condition suspended between luminous vitality and profound melancholy, between impulse and reflection. The works on display explore iconic themes of the city: the sea, its landscapes and architecture, its historic traditions, customs, and culture. Each painting becomes an emotional lens through which Gentile interprets the city with expressive tension and heartfelt resonance.
“His body of work,” says curator Maria Corbi, “is vast and multi-layered, encompassing canvases, panels, pastels, and ceramics, rendered in a style where the energy of the gesture and the density of color become vehicles of his existential vision”.
Narrative, technique and experimentation in continuous dialogue
Napolitudine is the first organic retrospective dedicated to the artist, capturing the full complexity of his research through thematic clusters ranging from natural and urban landscapes to domestic intimacy and collective moments, from individual portraits to choral scenes. The exhibition is conceived as a journey through the seasons of Gentile’s painting, where artworks of different periods and techniques engage in dialogue, merging into a coherent narrative shaped by constant experimentation.
His canvases speak of impulse and form, of action and memory, of creative instinct and contemplation. Each work distills life experiences and psychic energy, turning the canvas into a tool for rewriting reality.
“Every painting,” Gentile once said, “is a mountain of life”.

Luigi Gentile: artistic biography and exhibition history
Born in Gragnano (Naples) in 1938, Luigi Gentile masterfully combined his dual vocations: medicine and painting. After earning his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Naples Federico II in 1965, he began painting in the early 1960s, dedicating himself completely to art.
A prolific and multifaceted artist, Gentile created:
- over 1,000 oil paintings
- approximately 10,000 pastels
- 400 ceramics, 200 glassworks and 800 stone pieces
His oeuvre blends tradition and innovation, grounded in post-impressionist principles and driven by strong emotional sensibility. Each piece is a living impression, a lasting trace of human experience captured in color.
Among his most notable exhibitions:
- solo shows at Castel dell’Ovo and Sala Gemito in Naples (1982)
- a special exhibit in Bormio during the 1985 World Ski Championships
- featured at the Civic Museums of Varese (1987) and Castello Giusso in Vico Equense (1988)
- participation in the Biennale Space in Venice (2024)
In 2022, one month after his passing, the Spazio Luigi Gentile was inaugurated inside the Public Library of Gragnano.
