The report consists of recommendations on the EU’s approach towards Western Balkan countries aspiring to join the European Union.MEPs are expected to adopt a report in the run-up to the 2020 Western Balkans summit that is scheduled this spring in Zagreb. They will vote on the text prepared by the rapporteur Tonino Picula (S&D, HR) that largely deals with enlargement issues, only a few weeks after the Council finally decided to give the green light to start accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia. The report consists of recommendations on the EU’s approach towards Western Balkan countries and their aspirations to join the European Union, in light of the EU revised enlargement methodology that the Commission presented in February. Besides Albania and North Macedonia, in the Western Balkans region, Montenegro and Serbia have already started accession negotiations, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidates.
