A strategic milestone for tourism revival. Now we need collective effort from the territory.”
This long-awaited move marks a strategic turning point for Sicilian tourism: the removal of the municipal surcharge on tickets from Sicily’s smaller airports is now reality. Rosalia D’Alì, President of the Western Sicily Tourism District, emphasized its significance and applauded Airgest President Salvatore Ombra, along with regional and national authorities, for making it happen.
It’s an achievement of extraordinary importance for revitalizing our tourism sector. This concretely enhances the competitiveness of Trapani Birgi and Pantelleria airports,” said President D’Alì.

A more connected and attractive Western Sicily

Backed financially by the Sicilian Region, this initiative strengthens Western Sicily’s role in airline networks, opening up new opportunities for routes, jobs, and economic development. The District hopes operations will begin as early as October, in alignment with strategies to boost off-season tourism through outdoor experiences, cultural and experiential travel.

The portal West of Sicily (www.westofsicily.com) showcases an authentic and surprising destination, with over 150 km of coastline, five archipelagos, 300 days of sunshine per year – and 2,500 years of history. From Erice to San Vito Lo Capo, Marsala to the Egadi Islands, every corner offers tailor-made experiences for families, couples, and curious travelers.

Airgest and the territory: a shared challenge

Airgest’s commitment must be matched by a collective effort from the territory,” added D’Alì, “with better hospitality standards, efficient services, proper infrastructure, and fair pricing”.

The Tourism District calls on institutions, operators, and citizens to work together with shared vision and responsibility – steering clear of pointless controversy and focusing on unified strategies. The goal is clear: to make Western Sicily a year-round competitive destination, capable of attracting sustainable tourism and generating long-term value for the region.
