European glaciers on the brink

Climate crisis: Summer 2025 marks a dramatic turningpoint for european glaciers

The summer of 2025 has become a watershed moment for European glaciers. Record-breaking temperatures in July and August brought forward the #GlacierLossDay, highlighting the accelerating climate crisis and the gradual disappearance of the continent’s “white lung.”

Glaciers in danger: the causes of their disappearance

The main factors pushing glaciers beyond the point of no return include:

  •  Insufficient snowfall during winter
  • Hotter and longer summers
  •  Extended and more intense melting seasons

Without immediate action, these ancient ice masses risk vanishing forever, with devastating consequences for water resources, agriculture, and energy production.

Alarming scientific data

A recent study published in Nature Climate Change warns that even a temporary overshoot of the +1.5°C threshold could cause irreversible damage to glacier mass and water flows, with consequences lasting for centuries.

According to Greenpeace, by 2050 we could lose nearly 50% of Italy’s glaciers. The science portal Scienza in rete confirms that over 90% of Italian glaciers now cover less than 0.5 km².  “The melting of glaciers is clear evidence of a climate crisis already underway, with dramatic effects on water, agriculture, and energy”.

EverBlue Life Foundation’s call to action

These numbers aren’t just statistics. Our European glaciers are telling us they’re in danger,” says Daniela Dagnino, Director and Co-founder of the EverBlue Life Foundation. The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation—but concrete, collective action is urgently needed.

As EverBlue Life Foundation, we’re ready to do our part: support scientific research, inform citizens, and urge governments to make bold decisions. Time’s up. We must act now,” concludes Dagnino.
