Archangelica o Angelica

Highly valued since ancient times for its beneficial effects on health, Archangelica (or Angelica) is a medicinal plant with numerous properties, often referred to as “the herb of Angels”.
A legend tells of the Archangel Raphael, who, appearing in a monk’s dream, revealed the beneficial properties of Archangelica, indicating this plant as an effective remedy against the plague. From that moment on, Archangelica was used to treat and heal all infectious diseases, purify the blood, and address various ailments.

Healing properties of Archangelica

Angelica primarily contains essential oils, coumarins, tannins, and sesquiterpenes, which contribute to its healing properties. It is associated with diuretic, expectorant, digestive, tonic, and appetite-stimulating effects (when taken before meals, it boosts appetite).
Additionally, it seems to help stabilize blood sugar levels.
In the medical field, it is used to stimulate gastric secretion, combat flatulence, and treat rheumatic and skin diseases topically, as well as for fever, headaches, and toothaches.
Archangelica is also used to promote menstrual flow and alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. When taken for cold-related conditions, it helps dissolve and facilitate the expulsion of phlegm due to its warming properties that invigorate the body.
Its oil is also attributed with medicinal properties; in particular, it seems to possess antibiotic action. The essential oil derived from the seeds is used to scent cosmetics and personal hygiene products such as soaps, toothpaste, and deodorants.

In the kitchen

The seeds of this plant, given their strong and valuable fragrance, are often used to prepare homemade liquors and aperitifs and to flavor confectionery products.
The leaves and stems can be consumed in salads, either raw or cooked, or used to prepare herbal teas with a delightful licorice aroma. Archangelica decoctions are indicated to stimulate digestion in cases of intestinal sluggishness and help soothe irritated skin.

Warnings

Archangelica is not recommended during pregnancy due to its stimulating effect on the uterus. Additionally, it may be contraindicated for individuals with diabetes due to its sugar content. Archangelica should not be taken during menstruation or in the presence of uterine fibroids. Its use should also be discontinued in cases of severe breast sensitivity.
The use of essential oil on the skin is not advised in cases of prolonged sun exposure, as it has photosensitizing effects that could lead to dermatitis.
