Sindrome da stanchezza cronica fibromialgia -Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue

Recognizing the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, to distinguish between them.

Fatigue, pain, heaviness… Generic symptoms that many tend to associate with both chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, as if they were the same disorder. In reality, they are two distinct conditions, each characterized by specific features that, when carefully analyzed, allow us to differentiate them.

Chronic fatigue syndrome or Encephalomyelitis

Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, is characterized by a constant sense of fatigue that is difficult to alleviate. It is complex to delve into the details and fully understand the underlying reasons, as the exhaustion experienced does not improve with rest and does not seem to depend on high-intensity physical activity or other health issues.
This syndrome can affect anyone, particularly women aged between 40 and 50. Children between 13 and 15 years old are also not exempt. Among the most common symptoms are memory and concentration deficits, muscle and joint pain, frequent sore throats and headaches, swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits, and disturbed sleep.
And if the feeling of fatigue becomes more overwhelming, to the point of hindering even the simplest daily tasks (getting out of bed, going to work), depression and consequent social isolation may set in.

Fibromyalgia, on the other hand, is a rheumatic disease that affects the musculoskeletal system, causing chronic and widespread pain in tendons and ligaments. Not only that. It is also possible to experience muscle stiffness and tension in various parts of the locomotor system. In more extreme cases, besides hyperalgesia (an increased response to stimuli, capable of causing painful sensations), asthenia (chronic fatigue and debilitating tiredness), mood disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome may be observed. These symptoms can occur simultaneously and, in part, show similarities with myalgic encephalomyelitis, especially at the behavioral level, such as anxiety and stress.

Possible Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia

Various factors contribute to the pathogenesis of fibromyalgia. Firstly, genetic and hereditary causes: if multiple members of the same family fall ill with the same symptoms, it is likely that there is a genetic mutation at the root.
If one suffers from autoimmune rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or lupus, they are more predisposed to fibromyalgia. It can also arise as a consequence of a viral infectious disease with fever, or in the post-accident or post-surgical phase. Not to mention psychological traumas, which act as a “trigger,” just like physical traumas. However, these causes are still under investigation.

As for chronic fatigue syndrome, scientists are also studying to determine its underlying reasons. Like fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis may depend on viral infections, immune system defects, hormonal imbalances, and psychological issues.

Treatment

Therefore, if you suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, avoid particularly stressful situations, alcoholic beverages, and coffee. Do not overindulge in sugars and artificial sweeteners. Stay away from foods or drinks to which you are intolerant.
Instead, eat light meals throughout the day and try to carve out some time to relax your mind and body. Go to bed at the same time every night and avoid afternoon naps. In addition to a healthier lifestyle, you could also consider supplements based on:

  • B vitamins, which are crucial in the energy production process, protein metabolism, red blood cell formation, and the proper functioning of the central nervous system. Specifically, B12 is an ally for those suffering from chronic fatigue, as it improves memory, mood, and alleviates weakness in the lower limbs.
  • Cordyceps sinensis, which strengthens the adrenal glands. A natural restorative, it combats stress and boosts the immune system’s resilience.
  • Magnesium, essential for the well-being of our body. It participates in over 300 metabolic functions and, in particular, increases energy levels.

The latter is also a remedy for those suffering from fibromyalgia, as well as:

  • Griffonia, a natural antidepressant and precursor of serotonin, which influences mood and sleep states by affecting melatonin production and curbing appetite.
  • Boswellia, a resin rich in anti-inflammatory active principles, free of side effects, and suitable for long-term use. Often marketed alongside turmeric, which has strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

There are also fibromyalgia supplements based on PEA (palmitoylethanolamide), alpha-lipoic acid, carnitine, and other natural substances that can restore cellular function by promoting mitochondrial efficiency and, consequently, enhancing energy performance in individuals affected by myalgic encephalomyelitis and fibromyalgia. This is because the aforementioned substances act as biological modulators that regulate the excessive function of mast cells, immune system cell fractions involved in neuroinflammation and the maintenance of chronic pain (PEA); reduce musculoskeletal pain (alpha-lipoic acid); and interact with the mechanisms responsible for pain perception (carnitine).

It is also advisable to regularly perform stretching and aerobic exercises, which can optimize muscle elasticity, relieve painful areas, and train the cardiovascular system. Dedicating even a few hours a week to such practices can only help prevent the risk of physiological worsening.
