Melagrana Pomegranate

The pomegranate is the undisputed queen of autumn tables, though its early fruits appear even before the end of summer. Rich in symbolic value, the pomegranate has been regarded since antiquity as an elixir of long life. This is because, in addition to being a miraculous cure for many ailments, it contains numerous ruby-red seeds that perfectly represent prosperity and good fortune.

The fruit of the pomegranate tree (a name often used to refer to the fruit itself) derives its name from the ancient Latin words “malum” and “granatum”. In Italian them translate to “apple” and “with seeds,” respectively. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, studied the pomegranate in his work, praising its medicinal virtues, which have only been fully explored by modern science in recent times.

Properties of the the Pomegranate

Rich in nutrients that give it health-benefiting properties, the pomegranate is one of the most studied foods in recent years and has been ranked first among the most antioxidant-rich foods available in nature. This is due to its high percentage of flavonoids (even more than blueberries, red wine, and green tea) and its content of vitamins (A, C, and B-group) and minerals (especially potassium, phosphorus, and iron), which ensure its effective anti-inflammatory and preventive action against cold-related illnesses.

Thanks to these compounds, the pomegranate can be considered an ideal fruit to include in the diet to prevent

  • cancer,
  • neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s)
  • and cardiovascular conditions.

The polyphenols in the fruit act by breaking down fats that accumulate in the arteries (a cause of atherosclerosis), promoting

    • improved circulation and lowering cholesterol levels,
    • including LDL (considered harmful) and total cholesterol.

Studies show that it is not so much the seeds (called arils) that contain the active compounds effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. But rather the peel and the white membrane surrounding them. For this reason, consuming the extract of the whole fruit is more effective than simply eating the seeds.

Regulates Blood Pressure and is “Excellent Food” for Gut Microbiota

Studies have also shown significant improvements in tissue elasticity, particularly in people with diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. For those suffering from hypertension, pomegranate juice proves to be a good remedy as it helps regulate blood pressure. Additionally, pomegranate helps combat the fatigue typical of seasonal changes and is an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, making it “excellent food” for our gut microbiota, aiding digestion and protecting intestinal health. It is low in calories, making it a perfect addition to a low-calorie diet.
