Schisandra chinensis is a climbing plant native to the tropical and temperate regions of East Asia, particularly widespread in northern China, Korea, and Russia. It produces small red fruits whose Chinese name (wu wei zi) means “fruit of five flavors,” symbolizing its holistic action on the body. These five flavors – sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and spicy – nourish the five key organs of health: the spleen, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs.
Its berries, the parts used in phytotherapy, are sun-dried and processed into extracts and fresh powder preparations. These are primarily employed for their antioxidant effects and their ability to boost energy levels in the body.
Properties of Schisandra Chinensis
For centuries, this plant has been used as a tonic in traditional Chinese medicine. Only in recent years has it been scientifically proven that its active compounds (called “lignans”) give it properties similar to a restorative. It can therefore revitalize a body weakened by infections, convalescence, or a sedentary lifestyle.
First and foremost, Schisandra is known as an excellent adaptogen: its active compounds positively influence the body, helping it “adapt” to periods of high stress, such as emotional tension or the onset of cold weather. They also boost immunity against bacteria and viruses and possess antiasthmatic, antitussive, antibacterial, and expectorant properties. These compounds stimulate the central nervous system, improving reflexes, endurance, and concentration.
Schisandra also helps protect and reduce inflammation in the liver. It promotes increased levels of glutathione, a substance that supports the natural regeneration of the hepatic system. This is particularly important as the liver is often strained by a diet high in fats and comfort foods, as well as stress and medication overuse.
Furthermore, according to various studies, its antioxidant compounds may also have the ability to repair damaged liver cells and prevent their degeneration.
The “five-flavored berries” are thus valuable allies as antivirals, antioxidants, hepatoprotectives, and neuroprotectives, with the ability to heal damaged tissues. The efficacy of lignans and essential oils has been demonstrated in helping athletes maintain high performance, aiding convalescents in recovering from illness, and, in general, helping everyone cope with high levels of stress.
Precautions
Schisandra has some rare contraindications that should be considered before use. It may cause stomach issues, reduced appetite, or problems with acidity and gastroesophageal reflux. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, medical advice is recommended before regular consumption.
