Cedro del Libano - Cedar of Lebanon

The fame of the majestic Cedar of Lebanon tree (growing up to 40 meters tall) has very ancient origins. According to the Old Testament, its trunks were used to construct the columns of Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. Additionally, the Phoenicians learned to build ships from its wood, as taught by the Egyptians. Cedar oil from Lebanon was widely used for its antiparasitic and antiseptic qualities, for embalming the dead, and for preserving papyrus. Today, beyond its historical uses, this plant holds significant importance in herbalism and phytotherapy for its medicinal properties.

Properties of the Cedar of Lebanon

With autumn comes the resurgence of respiratory or gastrointestinal allergic disturbances, such as rhinitis, colitis, and gastritis, signaling a general inflammatory state. Moreover, the change of season also brings stress and mood alterations that heavily impact the endocrine system and, consequently, the immune system. This precious plant can be of help. From its wood, an essential oil is distilled that combines a remarkable antibacterial and antputrefactive action with a powerful antidepressant effect. It acts as a balancer of the limbic system, the center of the emotional system directly linked to the “emotional brain” – the intestines – where most immune cells reside.

Cedar oil also functions as a sedative: it calms and relaxes the mind, alleviates anxiety and stress, and can be used by those suffering from insomnia. Another important property of cedar oil is that it relieves spasms of various types, including respiratory, muscular, intestinal, and nervous spasms. It is a natural diuretic, thus aiding in cases of hypertension, overweight, and promoting normal joint function. Additionally, it stimulates urination, helping to eliminate toxins and excess fluids from the body.

Prevents Influenza, Promotes Sleep, and Alleviates Skin Issues

When applied daily to the abdomen and chest with a gentle massage, Cedar of Lebanon essential oil also prevents the onset of initial viral infections. In cases of colds or influenza, it can be used as an expectorant since it eliminates phlegm and helps clear the airways, relieving congestion. It also alleviates headaches caused by these conditions and aids sleep. Finally, from the young shoots of the plant, a glycerin macerate is obtained with antiseptic and tissue-regenerating properties. This remedy is primarily used to treat skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, or ichthyosis, keratosis affecting the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, as well as dermatitis with intense itching and dry skin.

Precautions for Using Products

Generally, the use of cedar-based products does not present contraindications. However, it may cause allergic reactions or sensitivities in sensitive skin, so it is always recommended to test the products. It is advisable to avoid its use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in young children.
